There will be many senior executives who will read this book and muse “If only, if only this guidance had been available to me when……”
The Authors state their objective unambiguously - This book is about how to get to the top - and with the benefit of their business experience and consultancy skills they make a compelling case for the ambitious to start the planning and orienteering process at the start of, rather than at a crisis point in, their careers.
This invariably means taking a real interest in business as a whole and the development of skills not related directly to the successful performance of any current role. Yet this must be accepted not as a substitute for, but as a complement to, an existing work mandate.
The case for this is based on another powerful statement - You have arrived at the top because of your skills as a manager and to a lesser extent your skills as a leader yet it is now by the latter you will stand or fall. It is a message that cannot be over emphasised.
If I was obliged to single out only one other pivotal statement it would be the emphasis they place on unremitting energy and resilience if you aspire to reach the top or get close to it. There is great value in the clearly articulated self-help measures this book recommends and I am delighted to add my own endorsement.
Read, enjoy, succeed and be fulfilled. Back to start
